I have been a huge fan of Rosalind Wyatt for several years who combines her love of textiles and calligraphy by embroidering family letters and histories onto heirloom costume pieces. You can view her beautiful work at www.rosalindwyatt.com.

The piece pictured here is perhaps the inspiration behind Wyatt’s creations, embroidered by Agnes Richter, held in an asylum for the insane in the 1890’s. At first I mistook it for a work by Wyatt but on closer inspection found a more sinister undercurrent to the work.

from the Prinzhorn Collection

The Ornamented Being: Agnes Richter, a mental patient in an Austrian asylum, embroidered her jacket with text. Through the script she transcribed herself into time, space and place. Her writing orients and disorients. Made in 1895, it is a standard issue uniform given to mental patients at the time. Richter has embroidered so intensively that reading is impossible in certain areas of the garment. Words appear and disappear into seams and under layers of thread. There is no beginning or end, just spirals of intersecting fragmentary narratives. She is declarative: “I”, “mine”, “my jacket”, “my white stockings…., “I am in the Hubertusburg / ground floor”, “children”, “sister” and “cook”. In the inside she has written “1894 I am / I today woman”. She has also re-embroidered the laundry number printed on her jacket “ 583 Hubertusburg”, almost transforming something institutional and distant into something intimate, obsessive and possessive. It is a compelling piece of hypertext and untamed writing.

Laura Splan, from the series Doilies, 2004 (source)

“Doilies is a series of computerized machine embroidered doilies. The design of each doily is based on a different viral structure [SARS, HIV, Herpes virus, Influenza virus, and Hepadna/Hepatitis B virus, respectively]. The lace doily has traditionally referenced designs and motifs from nature. Furthermore, these decorative objects would be heirlooms, handed down from one generation to the next. The work explores the “domestication” of microbial and biomedical imagery. Many recent events, epidemics, and commercial products have brought this imagery into our living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Bio-terrorism, SARS, and antibacterial soaps alike have all heightened our awareness of the microbial world. Doilies serve as a metaphor for the way we have adapted our everyday lives to these now everyday concerns. Here domestic artifacts and heirlooms manifest the psychological heredity of our cultural anxieties.”

Costume by Polish Designer Katarzyna Konieczka

I am a costume maker and avant garde fashion designer. My creations are mainly to be viewed on a stage or a catwalk. The main aim of my designs is to create an impact on the viewer and evoke feelings. The costumes are not for everyday use.

Each costume has been created as a one off, the techniques used to create them have been developed by myself, by experimenting with textiles, fabric and paint .

Each costume requires special care and each is cleaned separately from everything else according to the label. In most cases I re- use the purchased fabric by processing or dying them, I never use fabric straight from the shop. The main motifs in my designs are asymmetry, destruction, dramatism, macabre. All costumes have been hand made myself.

Beili Liu - The Mending Project (2011)

“…Hundreds of Chinese scissors suspended from the ceiling in a shimmery cloud. The piece involved the artist sitting at a small black table, hand-mending patches of fabric together which visitors were encouraged to cut themselves near the entrance. As the performance continued, the piece grew as one continuous cloth and lay spread on the floor.

The hovering mass of the downward-pointed scissors represent the distant fear and looming violence present in today’s cultural climate. The sharp blades above the artist are put in contrast by the silent and simple act of mending. The dichotomous result of the instant fear superimposed with the calming effect of the sewing created a surreal atmosphere in the room.”

I have invented (insofar as one can) the word ‘crapestry‘; a rather obvious contraction of the words ‘crap‘ and ‘tapestry‘.

Contemporary commercial tapestries might be argued to be the exemplification of superficial chintz; spectacularly vapid, vividly dull, unquestioningly conformist, gaudily bourgeois, and at the same time unyieldingly time-consuming. The subject matter is often romanticised, uncritical, and both exploits and reinforces established stereotypes. The outcome? Standardised ‘precious things’ cherished by the softly smiling, callous fingered Grandma’s of the world – harmless old dears who quietly revel in the creation of ‘cheeky terrier’ and ‘dewy chrysanthemum’ cushions, or ‘God bless this house’ picture frames. No mention of mortality, no depiction of suffering, nothing surprising, nothing funny.

Crapestries capitalise on cross-stitch orthodoxies, exploiting their established themes. Some crapestries are funny, some are sad, and some may cause offence; but that’s fine.

Even the desperately sad crapestries make many people laugh, whether by a curious schadenfreude or simply because they are unaccustomed to encountering troubling subjects addressed through the medium of tapestry; it’s incongruous. One might ask “What’s funny about a dead penguin chick or a thermonuclear attack?” Quite a lot apparently.

If you have ever graffitied a penis onto a magazine in a dentist’s waiting room, shot delicate ceramic ornaments with a rifle, or thought something was desperately sad when everyone else thought it was harmlessly funny (or the other way around), then you will likely enjoy having a look at my work.

365 Lucky Days, series.

‘So I have had this goal for a while, to make something every day for one year. With any goal you need accountability and that is why I am committing myself, in blog format, to create with love a new work of art every day for the next 365 days.

I hope that you all are inspired to create something every day’

I’m so inspired to start my own series..

All of my life studies are worked in thread...

Shizuko Kimura

All of my life studies are worked in thread directly from the life model without using preliminary sketches or photographs. Working under strict time pressure in this way produces a dynamic tension that arises from the need to work at speed with the needle and thread in response to the model’s pose and is essential to capture the ‘Ki’ or essence of the subject.

My work fuses Oriental concepts of art and aesthetics with western concepts of figurative sketch and abstraction. The finished work demonstrates the subtlety of the sewn mark and the variety of line, weight and emphasis that can be achieved.

I use mainly fabric or paper as backgrounds, often combining the two surfaces in the same work to achieve greater textural and dimensional interest.

My early work was almost entirely monochromatic, using black threads on cream backgrounds. I am now experimenting with the use of a wider range of thread colour and coloured backgrounds in order to expand the scope of my work.

My techniques are application, free machine embroidery and textile collage. I call it painting by sewing machine. The yarns are my colours and the needle is my brush.

The tiny yarns have special power. The yarn is three-dimensional, it has the twist and the beautiful shine. When I sew hundreds of tiny twisted yarns together, the power and the three-dimensional effect of the yarns will strengthen.

The picture is very lively, when the light reflects from the yarns and gives power to the whole works.

My ideas come from nature, water, summer, joy of life, children, garden, flowers or just everyday life´s things. I am very interested in folds of the clothes, shadows and lights. I want to represent fabric by fabric; to sew pictures where human is wearing shirts and coats and to see the three-dimensional movement of the fabrics by painting sewing machine.

I want to share the feelings of joy and beauty through my works to people.

Incredibly artwork by PIERRE FOUCHÉ

_

His work requires immeasurable skills and a lot of patient. By knotting in threads of polyester he creates amazing pictures – for some of his lace works he needs several years to complete.
